BERG Efficiency Upgrade Cuts Fuel Costs by 33% for Lighthouse Ship Management’s Norwegian Coaster
24 February 2025 – Lighthouse Ship Management AS has successfully reduced fuel costs by 33% for one of its managed general cargo vessels through a BERG Propulsion retrofit. The Norwegian shortsea shipping provider confirms that the upgrade has significantly enhanced the vessel’s efficiency.

Terneskjaer Achieves 33% Fuel Savings After BERG Propulsion Retrofit
Torangsvåg-based Lighthouse Ship Management assessed BERG Propulsion’s energy optimization solutions for Terneskjaer, an 81-meter, 2,900 dwt general cargo vessel owned by Bio Feeder AS. The goal was to improve fuel efficiency, cut emissions, and enhance the competitiveness of the 2008-built ship.
After a thorough consultation, Lighthouse opted for a BERG retrofit package that converted Terneskjaer to a more efficient diesel-electric propulsion system. The upgrade included a new gearbox, two permanent magnet motors, and BERG’s MPC800 control technology. Additionally, BERG optimized the existing propeller blades to match the vessel’s operational profile and installed a nozzle to improve thrust, particularly at lower speeds.
“A 33% reduction in fuel costs is highly significant and points to a secure future for a ship which has proved itself as a reliable performer in Norway’s demanding coastal sector for over 15 years,” said Lasse Øpstad, General Manager of Lighthouse Ship Management. “Managed prudently, ships built and maintained to Terneskjaer’s quality can comfortably surpass lower carbon requirements and compete effectively for years to come.”
Lighthouse Ship Management oversees a diverse ships for seven shipowners, ensuring optimal performance and longevity for their vessels.
Enhancing Efficiency and Sustainability for Long-Term Competitiveness
As part of Norway’s NOx Fund initiative, the project also qualified for tax incentives by contributing to nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction efforts.
“There were several objectives for the Terneskjaer project, including improved performance, greater operational flexibility, lower NOx, decarbonization and increased lifetime,” said Magnus Thorén, Sales Manager – Energy Efficiency at BERG Propulsion. “However, energy efficiency is critical in every respect. We consulted closely with Lighthouse Management to evaluate the upgrade options and we are delighted that the trust of one of Norway’s leading ship managers has been wholly vindicated.”
With this efficiency-driven retrofit, Terneskjaer is now better positioned to meet future sustainability goals while maintaining its strong presence in Norway’s demanding shortsea shipping sector.
